First Responders

Below is a statical look at the number of First Responders in the US and Canada. It is unknown how many of these men and women have received specialized training in ice rescue. Ice rescue is a very hazardous undertaking, finding and using equipment that helps keep first responders safe is paramount.

Fire Departments

According to the National Fire Department Registry Summary of 2018, there are 27,217 registered fire departments, representing over 51,000 fire stations across the US. With staffed personnel totaling over 1,217,000. The regions of the U.S. are defined by the U.S. Census Bureau and listed below.

Northeast 21% (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont);

Midwest 31% (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin);

South 36% (Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia);

West 13% (Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington, Wyoming).

EMS Agencies

The Journal of Emergency Medical Service (JEMS.com) reports the number of certified EMS agencies in the US at 19437, with over 78,000 credentialed EMS vehicles and over 826,000 EMS professionals.

Law Enforcement Agencies

According to Politifact.com there are approximately 18,000 law enforcement agencies in the US. Made up mostly of State Police, local police, sheriffs offices and college campus departments. With over 750,000 sworn law officers according to the National Source of Law Enforcement Employment Data.

Canadian Fire Departments

NFPA key findings report says there are 3672 fire departments across Canada with over 1520,000 fire fighters.

Canadian Law enforcement

Policing in Canada is administered on three levels: municipal, provincial, and federal services. The National Statistical Office of Canada reports that there were just over 69,000 police officers in Canada as of May 2017.
